Introduction

It has long been Kach’s dream to travel to the USA and in particular, Miami, Florida. Aside from the obvious childhood draws of Disney World and Universal Studios, she’s also a huge CSI Miami fan, so when she had her USA visa approved in Bogota Colombia, we jumped at the chance to fly to Miami for a three week road trip around Florida!

We had read quite a lot about Miami and Miami Beach before we arrived, but we had no idea we were flying straight into such an eclectic mix of people, personalities, design, activities, culture, laid back vibes and fast-paced city lifestyle.

When looking for a hotel which could accommodate our first and later our final night in Miami, we were searching for a hotel which encapsulated both the open, multi-faceted, welcoming philosophy embedded in Miami culture, as well as our own feelings toward life and travel. Of course a beach side location, luxury accommodation, a swimming pool and an amazing breakfast would be a damn good bonus too!

We found this in the form of Circa 39, Miami Beach, located right next to Indian Creek Drive and one small street away from the beach, this revamped travellers’ boutique brings the Miami Beach art deco style into the present day, with a unique and international style, which flows throughout and a motto that symbolizes quite neatly how we feel about our travel lifestyle – “Life is a Trip. Satisfy your wanderlust.”

People

Miami and Miami Beach are very multicultural areas in themselves, which as people who have grown up and lived in different countries, we believe creates positive, engaging and exciting atmospheres to live in. Circa 39 is no different, as staying here you’ll most likely meet people from three to four different countries and at least two different continents. Each and every person working and staying in Circa 39 is jointly responsible for the cool, friendly atmosphere where people from around the world meet each other and exchange stories from the places they’ve been and the places they’re from.

Accommodation

Made up of two buildings with a relaxing, shaded courtyard in between, Circa 39 contains a mixture of rooms and suites. On our first night, we stayed in one of their King Rooms, with a king-size bed, surrounded in bright, but calming pastel greens and orange, while the teak wooden floors and white wooden shutters remind you that the beach is never far away!

There were plenty of facilities in the room, providing everything a global ‘wanderluster’ could possibly need – high definition flat screen LCD TVs, modern bathrooms with glass shower cabins, complimentary refrigerators, wardrobe mirrors. There also loads of closet space, because even the intrepid long-term travellers like to get their stuff out of their backpack and onto some hangers once in a while!

Meet & Retreat Suite

On our return to Miami Beach at the end of our Florida journey, the final night before boarding our flight back to our temporary home in Colombia, we checked back into Circa 39, but this time into their Meet & Retreat Suite, which is just about 600 square feet of Miami Beach cool! The suite was made up of a long, wide living room and dining / meeting area, with a wall-mounted widescreen LED TV, comfortable sofas and a private balcony overlooking the swimming pool. The separate bedroom had a king size bed and window view to the pool, with a very nice bathroom.

Food

With an in house restaurant and the aptly named Wunderbar, has a classic cool atmosphere and a laid back approach, with friendly and approachable staff from various different countries, which all add to the eclectic feel. We had our dinner at Wunderbar, choosing the Shrimp Bang Bang and a Bistro Burger with a cocktail and a local craft brew.

We had our breakfast included in our room, which was as international as the rest of the hotel – with cooked favourites like eggs, bacon and sausage, with breads and pastries adding a little touch of continental Europe to the equation. Obviously the coffee was strong and black, with fresh orange juice in cool little glass jars. All-in-all, the type of breakfast that gets the travel vibes flowing first thing in the morning!

Amenities

A private, outdoor car park, which is a godsend anywhere is Miami, just check whether or not it’s included in your booking.

Area Guide

Luxury Hotel Review – Circa 39 – Miami – Miami Beach Board walk

Miami Beach is just a two minute walk away and the long board walk alongside it is a nice way to explore while cutting back and forth on and off the beach, lined with bushes and palm trees. It was a cloudy day when we were there, but clouds just make for great black and white photography!

Head over to Wynwood near downtown Miami, one of the city’s coolest districts, to wander through the graffiti art painted on many of the buildings, grab some food and a coffee in a cool boutique café and check out the exhibits at Wynwood Walls.

Miami is full of museums and art galleries, many of which offer free admission.

Explore the multiculturalism of Miami by visiting the mini-neighbourhoods characterised and named after the people who have settled there, Little Havana and Little Haiti.
